I made a comment in a recent post that I have no desire to write a vampire book. I've read plenty, but I just don't think my writer's mind can invent anything new and interesting. My current audiobook read is Linger. It's the second in a series by Maggie Stiefvater and is about werewolves. I don't see myself writing about those either. So, what kinds of books DO I want to write in the YA genre? Here are the ideas that nag at me.
In a flash fiction piece for the Platform Building Campaign, I wrote about a mermaid. After writing it, I realized that I'd love to write an entire story with a mermaid. There are a lot of YA mermaid books out there, and I haven't read any of them. The thought of starting with a blank slate- no preconceived ideas except for watching Splash with Daryl Hannah- is extremely exciting. There are hurdles. It would help to have some background in marine life, and I have none. Of course, I'm sure that other writers had no background in the undead when they wrote their vampire and zombie books.
I have outlined a YA steampunk story with character cards. There's a rather large multicultural cast to this one. I get excited every time I think about it. I even have a title and can see the book trailer. I took a steampunk class taught by Suzanne Lazear and need to go back through my notes. Also, to do this one justice, I need to do more steampunk research. I have the steampunk elements of conflict in there and the appropriate attitudes. What am I missing? I need gadgetry. Cool gadgetry.
I had a recent conversation with my son about the elements of cyberpunk and my mind went wild. I'd love to write a book about the influence of information technology and a speculated change in social norms. I've recently read several dystopian society YA books and think that they travel down a similar path. This is definitely on my "books to write" list.
Another idea that I can't shake is a paranormal story involving something that really scares me. I saw a movie once that shouldn't have been that scary to me. The movie White Noise was about electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) and starred Michael Keaton. I'm almost ashamed to say that I think about this movie a lot. I mean to say it is RIDICULOUS how much this movie bothered me. If the radio or television station loses a signal and goes to white noise, I must turn it off immediately. I want to write a book that simultaneously scares you and breaks your heart.
My current projects are writing Book 3 in the Whispering Woods series and completing a New Adult paranormal tentatively called Nine. I only wish these other ideas would lay off the nagging until I can finish my current projects. Does anything I've listed interest you?
