Brinda Berry and I are hijacking each other’s blogs today, and we decided to do something fun to help kickstart the new year. Whittling my list down to only five was pretty difficult, as I’m prone to making all kinds of mistakes. Oh well. Here’s my list:
#1. Moved During Christmastime. The logic behind moving during the holidays was the fact the my kids would be out of school, and Christmas Break is a natural halfway point for the school year. We opened Christmas presents, only to pack them up for the move. The holidays are already busy and stressful as it is, and moving just made life miserable. I started 2013 surrounded by boxes.
#2. Mentored the Wrong Writer. I took a young, eager writer under my wing. And boy was that a mistake. They say that only when you are ready to learn will your master appear. Well, my timing sucked. I put a lot of energy into helping another writer who in turn did NOTHING about improving and becoming a better writer. Good riddance.
#3. Missed every single Writer’s Meetup. I have such good intentions with these kinds of groups. Maybe it’s the fact that I had a horrible experience years ago with spiteful and jealous writers that keeps me from joining another writer’s group. I still want to do this, but just have to find the right people.
#4. Ignored the Cinema. 2013 was a bad year for my movie-watching. I honestly can only think of three films I saw in the movie theater. Star Trek, World War Z, and Catching Fire. That’s it. I’m ashamed of myself. Wah!
#5. NaNoWriMo. This one’s not a regret, but in hindsight, it’s something I shouldn't have done, but I’m proud that I did it. I had a very big optometric exam at the end of November, and I was cramming. Stress galore. And then the demands of NaNo on top of that? Cray-cray. But I did it. I won NaNo again AND I just learned that I had passed my test.
Overall, there were more things I did in 2013 that I was happy about, and I look forward to 2014. How about you? Make any big boo-boos last year? Visit Brinda’s list on http://jaynoel.com
