What are you currently reading?

I'm reading Awakening the Fire. If you like vampires, shifters, and crime shows, this book is for you. It is very well-written, and I'm enjoying every bit of it.  I love trying to solve a crime!

"Being a cop is a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it, and Ari’s got her gun, a good sharp knife, and a few handy charms against things that go bump in the streets. She’s also a fire witch—a pedigree that comes in handy, since her partner’s only human."

What did you recently finish reading?

Wow. I listened to The Iron Duke on audio. Shelley Munro first recommended this book to me a long time ago. This book is fantastic. It's steampunk if you can't get that from the cover and the title.

Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth begins the story by attempting to solve a crime. She is one cool investigator. There are zombies, airships, pirates, gadgets, and nanobugs.  Oh my.

Warning: I discuss a lot of YA on this blog. This is definitely an adult read.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I downloaded this audiobook, Under the Never Sky, for the commute to work. I'll start it tomorrow. Or I may change my mind before morning and start Between the Lines.  I loved the book Easy by Tammara Webber, so I will probably like it.

All new books to me.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Iron Duke. I bet it's great on audio. Is it a male or female narrator?

Brinda
01/16/2013 4:51am

Shelley- It's a female with a British accent doing both POVs. I enjoyed it.

01/16/2013 5:22am

I haven't read any of these. The one you are currently reading intrigues me.

Love this feature, Brinda. I just finished Untouchable by Scott O'Connor, the next up is in the mail ... Gone Girl by Flynn, am playing catch up with two Michael Connelly mysteries, and the next two book club selections are loading into my kindle. I read mostly mysteries, women's fiction and some historicals. My book club mixes in classics and some biographies.

Do you ever read outside your genre?

Brinda

Yes, Florence, I do read a variety. I read all three of Flynn's books in a row. Sharp Objects may be my favorite.

I think some of the folks might misinterpret what you said for the Iron Duke, "Did she say Steam Hunk?" lol Seriously, did they just tell the cover guy, "No, we don't need your face, just the abs, sir." :-D

The all sound like fantastic reads!

You are so funny. That should be the title to a book--Steam Hunk. I'll have to keep that in mind. *grin*

What an interesting weekly event. Some interesting looking books there also. Currently, I've been on a classics kick. Reading - Roughing It - Mark Twain. Just Finished - The Screwtape Letters - C.S. Lewis and not sure what I'll be heading to, but I have Michael Offutts Slipstream and Occulus on my KIndle so maybe that's where I'll go.

01/16/2013 1:48pm

Thanks Far Away for thinking of me!

Brinda
01/17/2013 5:33am

I've read Slipstream and know you'll enjoy it. I haven't read the others you've listed.

01/16/2013 10:34am

Brinda, sometimes our reading lists collide, but this is not one of those times. I'm currently reading Sue Grafton's V is for Vengeance. My last read was Intimate Enemies by Joan Swan. Next up, Breathless, by Dean Koontz. I'm excited about all three. Often my reading choices are should-reads, but I'm enjoying three want-to-reads all in a row!

Brinda
01/17/2013 5:34am

Are Grafton's books a series you must read in order? Just curious. Also, I love Joan Swan's writing. I've read two of her books, including Intimate Enemies.

I've also read a lot of Koontz. I'd have to read the blurb to know if I've read that one.

01/16/2013 11:27am

I love the covers for paranormal romance books. *sigh

Brinda
01/17/2013 5:36am

Me, too, Michael. :)

Love the cover of the Iron Duke. Hot!!

01/16/2013 12:03pm

I'll have to check out the Iron Duke.

01/16/2013 1:03pm

Brinda
01/17/2013 5:38am

I want to read Portrait of a Dead Guy. It's on my TBR list.

01/16/2013 1:38pm

Can't wait to read 'under the never sky' - hope you enjoy it!

01/16/2013 1:46pm

None of those sound too much like they're up my alley. But I love the cover on the last book.

Loving these covers... gosh, I want to read all of them!!!

01/16/2013 2:27pm

Awakening The Fire sounds really good. Thanks for sharing.

The Iron Duke Sounds really cool - even with nanobugs.

Glad to hear someone else consumes audiobooks!!!!

01/16/2013 4:16pm

Under the Sky looks good to me . . .
I recently re-read Eragon by Paolini, am reading Guardians & The Lost Paradise by Michael Abayomi, and I am thinking of re-reading Susan Kaye Quinn's Open Minds trilogy. When I'm in the midst of writing projects, it's safer if I'm re-reading something . . .that way I don't get hooked, lose sleep, and forget to write, make dinner, etc.

Brinda

It has to be a great 5 star book for me to reread a book. Maybe I should adopt your practice and get more writing done!

I have The Iron Duke on my TBR list. Glad to hear it was such a good read. Right now I'm reading Every Day by David Levithan, listening to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere on audio and will be finishing up The Boneshaker (it's taken me a while to get through that one because of other reading obligations). Next up will be Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger as I embark on my classics challenge.

01/17/2013 6:02am

the iron duke sounds awesome! you say its adult, for violence or steaminess? do you think most steampunk has a big romantic element?

Brinda
01/17/2013 6:07am

I should be clear that there is heavy sexual content in the book.

It's a romance, but there's plenty of action. The steampunk world building of technology and the Victorian social overtones are amazing.

01/17/2013 7:48am

Between the lines looks like my kind of story!

01/17/2013 9:01am

I just finished Riveted, by Meljean Brooks. It's as good as The Iron Duke I think. I'm reading Lost Souls by Dean Koontz and next I hope to read Just Breathe by Kendall Grey.

They all sound like great books. I'm particularly intrigued by Awakening the Fire, I love the line "Ari's got her gun..." Very clever!

01/17/2013 5:20pm

These look like fantastic books. I'm reading Alligators Overhead and Cassastar.
