By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship.

My library had a whole section to celebrate banned books. I browsed through it for about an hour and picked out a couple. Fun!

I still can't believe that people still think it's a good idea to censor others. :-/

When I was a high school English teacher, I taught a banned book that had once been a part of the curriculum. After the First Death, by Robert Cormier. It turned on my kids to reading - especially my male students. But I did get in trouble. It was worth it, though. All the parents backed me.

Good teachers turn kids onto reading. Imagine all the kids who would have missed reading if it hadn't been for books like Harry Potter. It's on the top banned list. I'm glad you took the risk.

Why would Water for Elephants be banned? That seems strange.

Censorship irks me.

It was in New Hampshire. It was removed from an elective course list due to sexual content after a parent complaint.

I didn't know Hunger Games was banned. And why would they ban Water for Elephants? That's strange!

Wow what a great cause. Bravo!

Excellent idea for a hop.

I read Speak but not the others, although I own them.

I love this. I Tweeted and FB'd it. You have the most amazing posts.

Banned books are a reminder that opinion is subjective. Not everyone appreciates the message contained within two covers. It's rather interesting.

great blog hop. it's always amazes me what kinda books will get banned! esp when some books have really good messages

I remember when Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer were banned in the US and my brother bought them in France for me to read. Some of the books currently banned are absurd ... most noteably Like Water for Elephants );

I don't know much about banned books, but I'm looking forward to checking it out. Thanks Brinda!

It's always amazing to me which books are considered open season for banning. Are people really still concerned about this? Thank goodness the majority of the country still supports our right to explore and read!

Hi! I started following through feedburner, but isn't it closing in October?

It never ceases to amaze me at the things some people find the time and need to censor, yet our media is riddled with provocative images of women in compromising poses with their overly skinny bodies lauded as "perfection". I'll never understand it.

What?! I thought the parental advisory thing put an end to censorship in general. I thought they just need to label it for what it is. Although I don't see why Hunger Games would deserve a warning label, not that I read it.

The library on the base has a section of banned books and it's all "blocked" off with that yellow police "Caution" tape, which looked so real, I nearly asked someone what was up with the bookshelf :)

09/30/2012 6:37am

It is always interesting to see what and why it gets banned.

I do love me some banned books! And what a great giveaway this is.:)
