I'd like to spotlight some books today by Jianne Carlo. Although I post a lot of YA book trailers and information, my reading tastes are broad. One genre or type I don't tend to pick up is the historical romance. I'm so glad that I chose to read a book by Jianne. Jianne is a prolific author of adult romance books. One of her series is the Viking Warriors series.

I've read two books of the series, The Dragon Slayer and The Peace Maker. The other three are on my TBR list.  It isn't necessary to read these books in a certain order.

Here's my short review I posted on Amazon (Aug. 2011) about The Dragon Slayer:
This is not the type of book I usually read. I tend to stick with contemporary or paranormal romances. This book hooked me from page one. I fell in love with both characters immediately. Ruard is a strong, sexy hero. Catriona is also a great female lead with a good head on her shoulders. The Viking environment was so natural and authentic that I had no problem feeling that I was there. One of my favorite things was how the dialogue had a musical quality. This was my first book from Jianne Carlo, and I just downloaded The Peace Maker. I look forward to reading more.

Q & A with Jianne Carlo

  • Please tell us what inspired you to write about Vikings?
Jianne:  Bear with me as this is a roundabout way of answering that question. My first job interview was almost 31 years ago. Back then, no one prepared you for interviews, you went in cold and learned from each one.

After the preliminary niceties, the interviewer asked me, “If you could name someone as a hero, whether living or dead, who would it be?”

Now again, bear in mind that was a highly unusual question back then.

Without missing a beat I answered, “Eric the Red, Shakespeare, Neil Armstrong, and my father.”

The interviewer smiled, looked at me, and said, “We’ll finish the interview, but I’ll tell you this right now, you’re hired.”

Flummoxed, I asked, “Why?”

“Every single one of those individuals are pioneers. That’s the type of person I want working for me.’

Eric the Red and his son, Leif the Lucky have fascinated me from the get-go. For as long as I can remember, I’ve tried to put myself in their place, setting out into the totally unknown, travelling without navigational aids, braving Mother Nature. What amazing men!

To answer your question – it wasn’t so much being inspired as it was being compelled. I had to write about Vikings. I didn’t attempt the genre for two years, because I didn’t believe I had the requisite knowledge to portray them accurately. I’ve since taken two college-level courses on the period and the people and researched the topic to the nth.

I’m now on my second Viking series – Viking Vengeance. This is a trilogy and the books will be full-length novels.

  • Who is your favorite hero and heroine from the Viking series?
Jianne: Ah, that has to be Njal from The Peacemaker, and Ainslin from The Bear and The Bride.

Njal, because he is a Viking who values peace. Ainslin, because she turned what could’ve been a life sentence into a true partnership.

  • So, Jianne, if you could live in the Viking world, would you?
Jianne: Uh, no way. I hate the cold and I relish my comfort, as in a real bed, hot water, and good food.

However, if I could visit for an extended period, I definitely would.

Actually in 2013, I’m hoping to go to the Jorvik Viking Center in York, England, to spend time in the reenactment of Viking daily life and learn how to weave and make mead.

There is also a medieval reenactment at Warwick Castle with a full village in the grounds and jousts. Hopefully, I’ll manage a visit there too.

About Jianne Carlo
I'm an Iron Chef America and Law and Order addict who loves to cook, eat, and read. I wish you could burn a ton of calories being sedentary and eating. Don't you?

Married for thirty-four years to an amazing man who still astounds me every single day, I'm also the proud mama of three fantastic sons, all of whom are now of legal age. If only they'd stop changing majors in college...

I grew up on the Caribbean island of Trinidad where the population is representative of almost every race and nation on the planet, so multiculturalism oozes from my pores. Though I attended an all-girl Catholic school run by nuns, we were taught all religions, Hinduism, Muslim, Buddhism, and celebrated all the holidays associated with those religions. Did you know many delish foods go with religious holidays?

Alpha males, strong heroines, exotic locations, and cultural differences are my forte. And from Monaco, to Trinidad at Carnival time, to rural Washington, to Denali National Park in Alaska, to Sleeping Dog, Texas and Norway in 1028 AD, I'm travelling the world through my books, and sharing my view of it with readers.

One of the most rewarding aspects of writing is hearing from readers, and nothing makes my day more than an email from someone who's read one of my books. I love to hear what tickles someone's fancy. So far, I've heard from readers from almost every continent on the planet. Almost...

Love that you grew up on Trinidad, but are fascinated with Vikings. Very cool. Growing up reading Norse mythology I too think there is a wealth of culture just waiting to be tapped. I'll have to try one of your books and discover how romantic the Vikings are!

Jessica - Are you of Scandinavian descent? Is that why you read Norse mythology growing up? Did you make the connection with the tree in Avatar and Yggdrasil? It amazes me how many movies these days have a basis in Norse myth.

Thanks for stopping by.

Brinda,

Thank you so much for having me as a guest today.

I can't wait to read Whisper of Memory - love the title btw - I'm saving Whisper of Memory for my plane ride to the Romantic Times Convention in a week and a half - :)

Viking stuff has always intrigued me. I really liked "Eaters of the Dead" by Michael Crichton (sp)? and the resulting movie they made from it entitled "The Thirteenth Warrior".

Never saw the movie - actually, I didn't know they'd even made one - but I did read the book a long time ago. I'll have to check Netflix now - thanks for the tip Michael.

Great interview guys. Jianne - you'll love Jorvik. I've been a few times. Try and get there early in the morning as the queues can be quite something!

I haven't read a Viking story for ages, but your covers are definitely grabby. :)
Hubby and I visited York & the Viking center a few years ago. I remember it being interesting, but what I remember most was this man appearing suddenly in modern clothes to tell off my hubby for using his video camera. It gave us a heck of a fright! We'd missed the signs, and we still laugh about it today.

It was great to meet you, Jianne. :)

Darn - you aren't allowed to take pics or videotape? Bummer. But, thanks for letting me know, Shelley - forewarned and all that.

Etopia covers are amazing and the cover artist, Mina Carter, is incredibly talented!

I've added these books to my TBR list. I grew up in a tiny town in northern Michigan and our school mascot was the Norsemen, so I've been fascinated with Vikings from an early age (had to figure out what a Norseman was just in case we got tested on it!).

Hi Ally,

That's great - having a Norseman as a mascot. Maybe I should add one to my site. Hmm, I may just have to view a ton of Norseman candidates before I can decide on one. :)

Thanks for leaving a comment!

What a lovely thing to say Megan. *blushing*

Growing up in Trinidad taught me to value the little things in life. At one point, we could only count on having electricity about 5-6 hours a day - and you never knew when that would be. You learn to cope.

If you do get a chance to read one of my books, please drop me an email and let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Jianne

*sigh* Vikings. People so often assume they were all about the rape and pillage but they had a fascinating culture, magnificent art and travelled incredibly widely. I've always fancied writing about the Vikings who portaged across to the Danube and sailed down into the Black Sea, ending up as personal bodyguard to the Eastern Roman Emperor in Byzantium, a deliciously corrupt and debauched place.

You'll enjoy Jorvik! And there are other options too - Cosmeston Medieval village, Butser Iron Age farm, castles without number. I hope you have a brilliant trip.

My aunt and uncle spent 2 years on Trinidad back in the 60s. They reckoned it was one of the happiest 2 years of their lives.

Wow Elin!

What a coincidence that your aunt and uncle lived in Trinidad. You sound very knowledgeable on places to visit re Vikings in the UK. I'd love to pick your brain to plan my trip next year. Email me at jianne@jiannecarlo.com if you have the time and/or inclination to share.

In a happy coincidence, my new Viking book, Malice Striker, revolves around a plot between King Harald, the byzantine Emperor Ioannes Tzimiskes, and King Kenneth of Scotland.

I so agree with you about the Viking culture and art. I find their code of honor and their incredible courage fascinating.

Have a good one!

Fabulous cover and title! I like Norse history, too, and in fact the first book in my new paranormal Drift Lords series comes out soon. Warrior Prince involves a rift between dimensions, descendants of the Norse gods, and an ancient prophesy. You are right in that the Vikings traveled wide and far. If you're ever at Disney's Epcot, be sure to see the Norway pavilion.

I loved Norse history - all those Gods in Asgard knocking each other out and getting jealous LOL. I've been thinking about revisiting them, so maybe I should start with your books Jianne! I love the picture too. I've been to the medieval re-enactment at Warwick Castle, that's fascinating, but I didn't know about the Viking one in York. Certainly must get to it sometime. Great interview both of you

Hey there Sue,

I did the Warwick one too - twice, in fact. Once with the dh and a couple of friends, and then with our three boys when they were all under the age of 13. They loved it. What I wouldn't give to spend a couple of weeks living in that medieval village at the foot of the castle. Of course, I'd have to have a hotel and hot running water to go to at night :)

Thanks for dropping in,

Jianne
