I'm currently reading Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver and must admit that it brings back a lot of high school memories. I'm not talking about the warm fuzzy feelings. It's made me think about the social quandaries of high school. We pick our friends and build our safety nets while navigating the world microcosm called school.
In 1985, John Hughes produced a brilliant movie that captured the high school social issue better than any other movie I've seen. In The Breakfast Club, five students are given a Saturday detention for 8 hours and 54 minutes in the Shermer High School library. If you've seen the movie, you'll remember the cast of characters:
Allison Reynolds, The Basket Case (Ally Sheedy)
Andrew Clark, The Athlete (Emilio Estevez)
Brian Johnson, The Brain (Anthony Michael Hall)
John Bender, The Criminal (Judd Nelson)
Claire Standish, The Princess (Molly Ringwald)
These five seem to have NOTHING in common. They've been stereotyped by their clothing, school activities (or lack of), and friends. The goal they do have in common is to survive the day of detention and judgemental Vice-Principal Richard Vernon.
This movie has a lot of comedy and wit because that's how Producer John Hughes opened us up to touch our hearts. I think Hughes also forced us to identify with his characters and their issues. By the end of the movie, we are hoping that the teens break through the stereotypes and cliques when they leave Saturday afternoon. The teens sign their essay as being from a unified group called The Breakfast Club. We want them to continue their relationships and grow as individuals.
Maybe you will tell me that cliques don't/didn't exist in the high school that you attend(ed). I'm not calling you a liar, but...Come on. Be honest. Me? I regret that I was so shy in high school and stuck to my little crowd. I missed out on knowing some awesome people.
Do you have a "Breakfast Club" experience where you broke out of your comfort zone and saw yourself or others in a different way? I hope so.
