I love movies about King Arthur and Robin Hood. Who wouldn't? You can't get any cooler than dashing knights, swords, honor, love, and tournaments. It's all very romantic. Too bad it's the movie version of life in the Middle Ages. In truth, the Middle Ages were hard times- no electricity, McDonald's, or True Religion jeans. Folks wrote status updates on the newly invented paper instead of Facebook. Handmade items were a way of life instead of a novelty. When I think about the Black Death, my romantic notions vanish in a puff of smoke.
This week, I traveled to the Ozark Medieval Fortress (click name to visit their website).Their tagline is "A Castle in the Making...", and that is exactly what it is. Michel Guyot of Burgundy, France had the idea to build a 13th century style castle in my home state. Construction on the castle began in 2010 in Lead Hill, Arkansas; it will be completed in 2030.
I took some video and would like to share it with you. Our tour guide, Medieval James, delivered a perfect mix of historical fact and anecdote. I'd love to have him as a history teacher! I learned so much about living in the Middle Ages during this one hour tour.
Please also visit their website as they do a fantastic job of telling the story of their plans and progress.
